The exact origins of the donut are unclear, but it is believed to have originated in the Netherlands in the 19th century. Dutch settlers brought their version of the donut, known as the olibollen, to America in the 1800s. The donut gained popularity in the United States and soon became a staple of American cuisine.
To make a simple donut you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 glass of milk
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 4 cups all-purpose flour.
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Oil for frying
Instructions:
1. Heat the milk in a saucepan until it is warm but not boiling. Remove from heat and sprinkle yeast over warm milk. Leave for 5 minutes until the yeast foams.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs and melted butter. Add the yeast mixture and stir until smooth.
3. Gradually add flour and salt to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a clean cloth and leave in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a donut cutter or glass to cut out donut shapes.
6. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 375°F. Carefully lower the donuts into the hot oil and fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side until they are golden brown.
7. Remove donuts from oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Optional: You can coat the warm donuts in cinnamon sugar or frosting.
8. Serve the freshly fried donuts warm and enjoy!
Note. You can get creative with your donuts by adding fillings or toppings such as jam, chocolate or sprinkles. Experiment with different flavors and shapes to create your own unique donut creations.
